The entire camp awoke and scrambled around in panic.
Jo yelled out in darkness. The campfire had fizzled out and the glowing embers gave off very little light.
“Everyone OK? Call in!”
“Shuri here. Where’s Liana?”
“Right behind you. You’re stepping on my foot!”
“I’m here, Kai.”
Jo was rapidly counting mentally. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7… which only left…
Hendra was on fire duty that night and fallen asleep. As he snoozed, the fire died out and left the camp in darkness. That in itself wasn’t an issue because the island had thus proven to be free of anything nasty that would creep in at night and snack on them. But keeping the fire going would be a signal to any passing ships or boats looking for them. And it did provide a light for the campers, which was particularly important for some like Hendrah, who was always a bit high strung and …
… was SERIOUSLY afraid of the dark.
After a while, the fire was relit and the now exhausted-from-screaming Hendrah had been calmed down with a hot chocolate. With Hendrah’s hysterical shrieks still echoing in their brains, everyone was too wide walk to go back to bed. So Jo and Kai decided to get everyone to fire up their laptops and get everyone’s mind to solving Hendrah’s fear-of-the-dark situation.
